Aleena of the Lantern by Michael A Chapman
Aleena of the Lantern
Aleena of the Lantern - Cover
Aleena of the Lantern is an enchanting story for young and old with all components of the best traditional fairy tales.

There is a handsome hero from supposedly humble origins, a beautiful damsel in distress, a benevolent king, a villainous regent, an enchanted forest where good and evil forces are at war, and more.

Aleena, a teenage peasant girl, is lured into a mysterious forest where Queen Goodwende, ruler of the Good Spirits and the creatures of the countryside, are constantly battling against Archlord Pheande, master of the Evil Spirits. Meanwhile in the Land of Farbeyond, the evil Knights of Mayhem are seeking to gain control of the local mortals.

To save Aleena from the Archlord, Queen Goodwende protects her with a spell that changes her into a brilliant firefly whenever she is in danger. Unfortunately Tayne, an evil lantern maker who uses fireflies to power his lanterns, catches her and decides to use her extra brightness to power a special golden lantern that he intends to sell to his king. When Tayne shows the special lantern to Kenelm, the blacksmith’s son, he immediately falls under the spell of its beauty. Throughout the tale are woven legends and moral messages, cleverly told by believable characters.

Read this to my eight year old daughter, she loved it! I was not too sure and would not have continued if she had not enjoyed it. I cannot put my finger on why I did not enjoy it, the plot is good, writing very good, editing good as well, it just felt like there was something missing that special spark. But I am not 8 and it is a childrens book and as I said she loved it. We split the score she wanted a 5 out of 5, me a 3 so it ends up a 4
